ESSENTIAL DEVELOPMENT 20 Great Techniques for Lightroom 4 by Sean McCormack
If I had just purchased Lightroom, I could not think of a better tool than Sean McCormack's Essential Lightroom to get me up and running in the develop module. It needs to be said right away that this book does not provide the nitty gritty about how Lightroom catalogs are setup or how to take use the other modules in Lightroom. For that you will need something like Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Book which I believe is the ultimate Lightroom 4 encyclopedia.
But if what you need is a focused look at the Develop Module for a bargain and getting the most out of it, then this book and the optional preset package do just that. I have been using Lightroom since its release and have to say the 95% of my time using it is spent in the Develop Module since that is where I perform all of my processing. I do not use Photoshop and therefore rely mostly on Lightroom to enhance and tweak my photos.
Sean takes us through the editing process in Lightroom by walking through the develop panels and providing examples on how to apply fixes and enhancements to your images. He also provides several processing techniques for portraits that should dock in handy for those looking to improve there capabilities in that area.
Again, if you are looking for a quick start to mastering the develop module you can't go wrong with Sean's book. The optional package includes a set of presets developed by Sean that will give you another head start to creating magic in the develop module.
